DIVA 2013 DIVA - female Akita under 2 years

Adopted!

Diva is a strikingly pretty Akita girl from the Baltimore area of Maryland. She was picked up as a stray and it's anyone's guess why her owners didn't come to take her home.

As with any Diva, our girl Diva is a glamour girl with a great sense of self. Diva is determined to belong to a family who wants one dog and no other pets. She's not willing to negotiate on that one. She'll tell you she is absolutely the only dog you're ever going to need as long as her feet are on the floor and she's in charge of the house.

Diva is house and crate trained and has good house manners. She's a very flashy girl and very friendly and loving. She is very smart and has completed basic obedience training while with us.

Diva has her own ideas about how to do things and will do best with a savvy Akita owner who is familiar with Akita girls who believe they own the world and are campaigning to make everyone else believe that too (yes, I did consider naming her after someone else but ... gee there were so many to choose from ... so I decided Diva suits her best. Surprised

Mirabel2 Mirabella

Adopted!

Mirabella is a lovely girl from the Columbia shelter in Georgia.  It is a mystery to us why her owners never came looking for her, but it seems we really hear that a lot these days.  Go figure.

Mirabella is sweet, spayed, housetrained, crate trained, vaccinated, HW clear, wormed and microchipped.  She's wonderful on lead and a pretty girl who likes people.

BlueMoonFiller BETTY FROM BARC SHELTER - DALLAS

Adopted!

Betty is an attractive pinto girl, about 3 years old. She's very sweet and doesn't appear to have had a lot of love in her life. She's one of the most agreeable dogs I have ever met.

Betty (from BARC shelter near Houston) needs to get some pictures taken. More than anything, Betty would like to be home for Christmas. Her HW test in Tx showed her at a low positive so she will be retested here next week and if necessary will receive appropriate HW treatment. Betty is house and crate trained and likes children. She is cordial with other dogs.

We have now visited with Betty on the subject of cats.  She advises us that she loves cats -- she tells us they are absolutely her favorite form of fast food but that she's confident she's usually faster.  Betty will do best in a home without cats, gerbils, hamsters, ferrets, rabbits, etc.. She does find tropical fish relaxing to watch.

Atari3 ATARI

Adopted!

Atari is perhaps 5 years old. He’s a gorgeous Karafuto Akita. He’s neutered, HW negative, current on all vaccinations and will be microchipped prior to adoption. Atari is a great housedog who is non destructive and good with kids and cats. He likes little dogs but needs supervision with them as he sometimes gets excited and can step on them – not a good thing for a little dog.  Atari knows his basic commands and – well I really don’t have anything to say about Atari except that I’d love to adopt him if I could take another dog into the family – I can’t, so he’s looking for someone to love him and let him love them.  Atari would like to tell you a little about himself:

Hi, I’m Atari. I’m a gentle soul who loves people and my stuffed animals. I wanted to talk to you for just a minute about my dad who had to give me up. He saved me about 4 years ago from a public shelter and he and I just love each other so much. Giving me up has been a hard thing for both of us. He gave me a great home and taught me a lot, and he loves me so much. Dad has gone through a real tough patch and the last thing was when he lost our house and couldn’t keep me anymore. For him that was about the last straw, and now he’s living in a studio apartment that doesn’t accept dogs and trying to get his life back together.

I just wanted to say “thank you” to my dad for saving me when I was a pup from that shelter and for teaching me so many things that make me into such a good boy today. I love my dad and he loves me enough to let me go. He brought me here to Blue Moon and explained that some things just need to change for both of us and that he wants me to go be a good boy and love another family. I want to make my dad proud of me always. So now I am here and I’m waiting to find a new family that will love me and that I can take care of.

Oreo Oreo

Adopted!

Well, hi. My name is OREO and I'm pretty excited. I just heard two of the kennel people talking here in the shelter in Oklahoma and they said that I am going somewhere called "Colorado" to be in the Blue Moon Akita Rescue. They said it is a good thing as now I will have a chance to find a good home with people who know and love Akitas ... and they even have snow in the winter! How cool is that??

Jack3 Jack

Adopted!

Hello ... I'm Jack and honestly I have to tell you "You don't know jack until you've met me." Yes, I am absolutely all that and a bag of chips with some good dip on the side.

P4270010-e Ricky - Male Akita

Adopted!

Ricky will be coming to us from Memphis Animal Services. Ricky was confiscated for cruelty neglect. Ricky was chained and eating garbage in the back yard of a house in Memphis. The owner declined the opportunity to go to the shelter to discuss the situation and possibly get his dog back. I'm thinking that is probably the nicest thing he ever did for Ricky.

Ricky is currently in our care in Memphis where he is being treated for heartworm. Ricky's life hasn't been easy and although his kennel card says he is 3, I'm betting he is younger. His life has ground him down -- Ricky is sad, Ricky is resigned, Ricky is grateful and we believe he's going to bounce back and be fine.

Beyond the obvious need for good food, heartworm treament and a good bath with a flea and tick dip, Ricky needs to know that he is safe and that he is loved for himself.

Please remember Ricky in your prayers. His medical bills and board will be high and we are grateful for any donations to help Ricky.

Tamika 3 TAMIKA - Female Akita

Adopted!

Tamika was found by some kind people in Springfield, MO. She has stitches from a recent spay surgery and we were certain this sweet dog's family would come looking for her. They have not done so however and the Springfield shelter does not adopt to the public (don't ask) so we agreed to take her into our rescue. An ad was run in thelocal papers and her family still did not come forward. Tamika is now scheduled to come to Denver to find her forever home --we are advised she is VERY BCCgood with people and other dogs and is unreactive toward cats (and as Akita folks know, that's a good thing).

RAMEY1 RAMEY - Female -

Adopted!

Sometimes it is just about doing the right thing. Ramey is "the right thing" -- she is not an Akita but she displays the loyalty that the Akita is known for, and Ramey needs help in finding a forever home. You see, Ramey waited by the side of the road for three long and lonely days and nights waiting for the family that dumped her there. Ramey believed that her family was as dedicated to her as she was to them.

Ramey is not more than about 14 months old. She is now spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, crate and house trained. Ramey has had a family that failed to treat her with the love and respect she deserves -- you can see it in her eyes and in her posture. But the day her rescuer picked her up off that roadl, that was the beginning or Ramey's new life. Perhaps you'd like to be a part of something as special as that.

Ramey comes to us from Liberal KS and if you click on her picture you can read her story as told to me by the woman who rescued Ramey from the side of the road.

BlueMoonFiller LITTLE BEAR & TY - bonded pair

Adopted!

Ty and his mommy, Little Bear, are gorgeous brindle Akitas from Atlanta, GA.  Their story is all too common these days -- much loved family pets, a job lost, a home lost, no more money and a homeless shelter that doesn't allow dogs.

Their story will be posted here shortly.  Know that these two sweet dogs have lost everything except one another.  We will only place them as a bonded pair going into a wonderful new home where they can enjoy the love of a new family and one another.

BlueMoonFiller BENTLEY's Story

Adopted!

As I said before, not every dog who comes to us is an Akita, but every dog who comes to us needs help of one kind or another.  Sadly, there are some who have been so badly abused or neglected that the most love and the best care isn't enough.  Today is October 23, 2012 and candidly I will tell you that we do not yet know whether Bentley will be able to travel the road back from the abuse and neglect he has suffered.

This is Bentley's continuing story as told by Debi, one of our most dedicated volunteers in TN.

Yesterday morning (10/21) , Elta Woodliff, a Certified Professional Animal Trainer, met me at the shelter to evaluate Bentley. It was an amazing experience to watch her and Bentley. When I first saw him gnashing at the bars of the kennel, I thought to myself....ut oh, what have I gotten myself into? But the whole time, the dog's tail was wagging. In a short amount of time, Elta had him lying on the ground eating out of her hand. While 2 grown men cowered in the corner with a catch pole, she took Bentley on a slip lead into the front office where she and I extensively went through the behavior evaluation. Bentley not only calmed down, but was rubbing my hands to scratch him behind the ears and actually kissed me on the face. Granted, I was smart enough not to give him my face, but he actually brought the kiss to me. Based on the eval, Elta did not recommend the dog be euthanized and reported that with proper training and the correct home environment, the dog will make an excellent companion. I pulled Bentley from the shelter under Blue Moon!!

There is supposedly (but I doubt) an on-going investigation of the shelter director and the police officer, so I'm keeping details quiet. There is already a chip-in set up and donations have been coming in all day. Elta recommended that Bentley begin training about 2 weeks post surgery, and he is now occupying Tippy's former wellness suite at Northgate. His crate sits in front of a glass door so while inside he'll get the view and sunshine that the other dogs don't. I've basically posted on Facebook that Blue Moon Akita Rescue pulled Bentley because local GSD rescues were over crowded and time was of the essence.

Luna standing LUNA - Female Akita

Adopted!

My new name is Luna and I'm from Hamilton TX. I'm between 4 and 5 years old and, honestly, I have tried to forget my life before I came into Akita rescue. Now all I remember is sometimes I get real scared if someone moves fast or makes a loud noise. I love children and am more comfortable with ladies, although I've been spending a lot of time lately with a lot of really nice gentlemen who are teaching me not to be afraid. I don't want to be afraid. I want to be loved and know that I'm safe and forever home.

What I REALLY WANT is a forever home of my own with people who love me and that I can take care of.
