My Story

I am currently enrolled in obedience training and am learning:

  • to improve my "socialization skills" with other dogs (that means even if it's little, it's not acceptable to pee on it; and it means if it's a girl dog, don't expect that she's going to be as excited to meet me as I am to meet her; and if it a male dog, it is never ok to walk up to him and issue a challenge.
  • The hardest socialization skill for me is the rule that "we do not launch a pre emptive strike when we approach another male dog" .... wow how boring is that?  I just want to play but apparently I scare the pants off most dogs who meet me. Karena assures me that all of these things will make me a much better pet, so I am working on it, but we need to keep working.
  • I am now walking on lead on all fours instead of my hind legs.  Personally I don't think it is nearly as much fun, but it really seems to please my "coaches".
  • I am also learning to sit when the person walking with me stops.  Clearly people tire out really fast and I always thought it inspired them to move right along if I picked up the pace when they were slowing down.  Apparently most folks don't understand that game and don't want to play itl, so I am walking on lead to make the coaches happy.  Usually it makes me sleepy, but we do get to go see cool stuff.
  • I have also learned good social skills like to wait until something is offered to me rather than grabbing something off a person's plate and running off to enjoy it.  Kinda takes the fun out of the whole process, but I do see that I am getting more treats these days.
  • I now take treats nicely from someone's hand.
  • I am still working on "sit-STAY"  ... I got the "sit" part of that but they tell me the STAY command is not optionalo.  What a drag.  Yeh I know what I am supposed to do but ... really .... must we?
  • I am still working on "down STAY" -- read the last bullet again, it's another exercise I don't see the point in.  After all, if they want to hang out, I'm good with that and heavens I will come back and get my leash holder coach when I finish exploring.  Karena says the STAY is really not optional and so sometimes we have to discuss that.

I am looking for a new forever home.  I’m good outside or inside but I love spending time with my family. Give me a chance to show you what kind of a good dog I can be in your household. I will be loyal and loving to my new family; just give me a chance and I will dedicate my life to loving my new family..
