Adoption Process

Blue Moon Akita Rescue

If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please just e-mail a request for an application to me at karena@bluemoonakitarescue.com and I will send you back a document that you can either fill out and email back to me or download, complete, and fax to me at 303 366 6811

Please know that we do screen very carefully the dogs we take in and the people who want to adopt them.  Our intent is to save as many Akitas and Akita mixes as possible, as long as the dogs are of good temperament and in good health.  We try to maintain a group of dogs in various age ranges and all that are house broken, crate trained, microchipped, parasite free, spayed or neutered and have been socialized with people and other animals, and who have already received some professional  obedience training.

We are picky about the dogs we take in because our intent is that they will never again be homeless.  We are picky about the people who adopt from us because we anticipate we will be knowing you for a number of years and want to be sure we're all going to enjoy that experience.  You're not buying a dog from us, you are adopting a new member of your family.... and you get us at no additional cost ... is that a deal or what??!!  If it makes it any easier, you can think of us as the in-laws on the dog's side of the family but you don't have to invite us to dinner.

We are proud of every one of our dogs and will always accept their  return for any reason. With that in mind,  it is to the advantage of all of us, and especially our dogs, if we do our homework on the front end of the adoption process.   Akitas are sensitive dogs and were not bred to be handed from home to home like a used computer.

Our goal is that every Blue Moon dog leave here to the "forever home of his own." We love our orphans and there is not a one of them that isn't welcome to stay with us forever ... but we don't have room to keep taking in if nobody goes forever home, so we want to send home with you a dog that we are happy to live with and love.

To that end, please know that once we receive your adoption application we will do the following:

  • We will run a background check on the adult applicant(s)
  • We will contact your references and we encourage you to request references from us, which we will be happy to provide
  • We may contact your place of employment
  • We will contact your vet
  • We will contact you to arrange for a home visit (it doesn't matter where you live, there will be a home visit),
  • We will meet every member of your household.  We recognize that not everyone parents their children in the same way but I would candidly say that our experience has been that people who don't train their children seldom train their dogs.  That's not a good situation for either the dog or the child.  The difference is that you already have that child, but you don't need one of our dogs to go with it.
  • We reserve the right to refuse to adopt to anyone if for any reason we believe that we don't have a dog that will be a good match for the applicant, their family and/or lifestyle.

Our adoption fees depend on the age, training, health and overall temperament of the dog, as well as whether the dog is an Akita or a mix.  Fees typically range from $150 to $500.  Please keep in mind it costs the same to pull an animal from the shelter, vaccinate, microchip, spay or neuter and nurse back to health, whether the dog is a purebred or a mix.  Also please keep in mind that one is not more worthy of love than the other and either one is going to love and protect you.

OK, so now that you've read all that, if you think you'd like to get to know us better,  please download that application or e-mail a request for an application to me at karena@bluemoonakitarescue.com and let's get started.
